Oral myotherapy is a series of exercises designed to teach patients how to properly use the muscles of their face, including how to chew and swallow properly. When these muscles are in harmony with each other and are working properly, it helps to prevent or relieve physical pain in the head, neck and mouth. Essentially, it is a form of physical therapy for your mouth.
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders are any kind of pain or poor functioning caused by the incorrect use or misalignment of your facial muscles. This can be a physical pain in places like your head, mouth or neck, or it can be simply painless but incorrect practices such as mouth breathing or a bad bite. Myotherapy works to reduce pain, remove symptoms and correct improper oral practices.
Misaligned, broken missing and heavily filled teeth can alter the fine balance between your bite and the position of the temporomandibular joint (jaw hinge). This leads to a painful condition commonly known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
